The Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) was established on 2005, in accordance with the provisions of the Biodiversity Act 2002 with its headquarters at the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. The major functions of the State Biodiversity Board, as per the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and State Biodiversity Rules, 2008 shall be to:

  • advise the State Government, subject to any guidelines issued by the Central Government, on matters relating to the conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of its components and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilisation of biological resources;
  • regulate by granting of approvals or otherwise requests for commercial utilisation or bio-survey and bio-utilisation of any biological resource by Indians; and
  • perform such other functions as may be necessary to carry out the provisions of Biodiversity Act or as may be prescribed by the State Government.

KSBB has the distinction of being the only state in which Biodiversity management committees (BMCs) has been formulated in all 978 Grama panchayts, 60 municipalities and 5 corporations signalling a broad based system of conservation at grassroot level. The first step towards conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity is its documentation and People Biodiversity Register (PBR) is one of the most comprehensive register of natural resources at Panchayt level, has already been prepared in 500 panchayats. BMCs is entrusted with ensuring the protection of the knowledge recorded in the PBR, especially to regulate its access to outside agencies and individuals and to devise strategies and action plans to conserve local biodiversity. The tuber conservation project at Edavaka, Wayand, Penstock culture and mangrove conservation project at Atholi and river bio fencing project at Perumanna are some of the conservation initiatives taken up by BMC of Kerala
KSBB is proud to host the first National Biodiversity congress, the first ever biodiversity mega event in Kerala organised under the auspices of MoEF and NBA.
